The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The buzz about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team is likely designing a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities you can achieve with a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to experiment both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be solved in diverse methods, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, players can look forward to a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
