The Actress Expresses Mentioning Donald Trump Would ‘Add Fuel to a Fire’ Tearing the Country Apart
Jennifer Lawrence has declared that she no longer feels fitting to speak out regarding the Trump presidency, fearing it could intensify unhelpful debate and further divisions throughout the United States.
‘I’m Unsure If It’s Wise’, Says Jennifer Lawrence
Speaking with media, she reflected, “During the first Trump administration, I believed I was moving hastily like a chicken with my head cut off. But experience has shown, over multiple voting cycles, public figures have no real impact in any way on electoral choices.”
She continued, “What’s the point? I’m just voicing my thoughts on something that’s going to heighten conflict dividing the nation apart.”
Shifting Views
Jennifer Lawrence has previously been open about voting for both Republican and Democratic candidates over the years. Brought up by conservative Republicans in her home state, she supported John McCain in 2008 before joining the left-leaning politics and revealing she recognized during the Obama era that supporting the GOP was undermining her own rights as a woman.
Earlier Remarks
Several years ago, she commented that Donald Trump’s election might signal “a disaster” and backed the Democratic candidate in the 2020 election. In the latest campaign, she lent her support to Vice President Harris, “as I think she’s an excellent choice and I know that she will do whatever she can to defend women’s health rights.”
Hollywood’s Stance
The star was aligned with many in the entertainment industry in her disapproval of Trump as a candidate for re-election, but the limited influence public figures have over the electoral decisions was underscored by Trump’s victory.
“Another four years appears changed,” noted the actress about Trump’s presidency. “As he stated his intentions. We were aware of his actions for four years. He was transparent. And voters made that decision.”
Current Projects
Lawrence is discussing the drama, the filmmaker’s project in which she portrays a new mother who faces challenges with her psychological well-being in the countryside. At a press conference for the movie in Venice, she commented on Israel’s bombings in Gaza: “I feel fear. It’s devastating. What’s taking place is no less than a genocide and it’s terrible.”
Broader Concerns
The actress elaborated by stating that she was saddened by “the hostility in the discourse of American politics at present and how that is going to be commonplace to the kids right now. It’s going to be normal to them that leaders are untruthful.”
She sought to redirect frustration about the conflict to decision-makers rather than actors and artists. “Stay focused on those accountable,” she said, which was interpreted as a reference to the then-recent pledge endorsed by thousands of arts community members to boycott Israeli film institutions.
Relatable Experiences
Jennifer Lawrence, who received an Academy Award early in her career for her role in her breakout movie, is receiving praise for her performance in Die, My Love. Although Lynne Ramsay has disputed the narrative being interpreted as one of post-birth struggles and psychological distress, the actress shared that she identified with elements of her role’s experience after the delivery of her youngest child, soon after filming concluded.
“There was concern regarding my baby,” she commented, “envisioning every worst-case scenario, and then questioning everything that I was trying. I was already in therapy, but I started taking a drug called Zurzuvae and I continued it for two weeks and it really helped.”
Film Challenges
Lawrence also spoke about the freeing requirement of completing nude scenes in the movie while she was some months pregnant and couldn’t work out.
“It feels nice,” she commented, of being forced to cast off vanity. “Honestly, I sometimes think where I’m like, What technically are the differences between me and a prostitute? But it doesn’t keep me up at night.”
