Plans for Trump-Putin Summit Delayed Shortly Following Budapest Talks Suggested

There are "no plans" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russia's Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has stated.

This past week the US president stated he and the Russian president would conduct negotiations in Budapest soon to examine the war in Ukraine.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the administration stated the two had had a "positive" call and that a meeting was no longer "required".

The White House withheld further information on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.

Previous Developments

The US president had discussed a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a day before hosting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Certain accounts indicated his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with those familiar suggesting the president had urged him to relinquish significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a agreement with Russia.

Nevertheless, on Monday Trump endorsed a peace initiative supported by Ukraine and EU officials to halt the hostilities on the present positions.

"Leave it as is in its current state," he remarked.

Moscow has consistently objected against halting the current line of contact.

The Russian government was solely focused on "permanent resolution", Lavrov commented on Tuesday, suggesting that halting hostilities would merely represent a short-term truce.

Diplomatic Positions

The "fundamental issues" of the conflict demanded attention, the Russian diplomat said, using Russian diplomatic language for a range of comprehensive conditions that encompass the acceptance of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the demilitarisation of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

The Ukrainian president stated talks regarding the battle positions were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to evade negotiations.

He further commented the sole subject that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the provision of extended-range arms to the Ukrainian military.

Weapons Discussions

The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with Trump recently preceded speculation that the US was planning to provide extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike Russian territory.

The Ukrainian leader asserted it was the Tomahawks issue that had pressured the Kremlin to engage in discussion. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had emerged as a "significant input" in negotiations", he commented.
