New York City Mayor Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race

New York City Mayor Mayor Adams declared his intention to endorse Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, despite an extended period of strained relations between the pair of Democrats.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism

Just last month, Adams had lashed out at Cuomo, labeling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and accusing him of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Yet, in a new statement, Mayor Adams made a U-turn, announcing he now intends to campaign alongside the former governor in communities where he holds strong support.

“It's essential to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have experienced gentrification on how critical this election is,” the mayor stated.

He added, “They have watched their rents increase in terms of gentrification and they have been overlooked in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those communities and speak one on one with organizers and organizations and I’m going to walk with the governor in those areas and get them involved.”

Election Landscape and Current Developments

The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the struggle between the former governor and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has drawn interest worldwide and symbolized aspirations for a revitalized leftwing of the Democrats.

During a latest candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee his conservative opponent stated they would refuse Adams’s endorsement if offered.

Months ago, Adams had launched his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after facing federal corruption charges which were later dismissed in exchange for his assistance with federal immigration raids across the city.

During a separate media briefing on the same day, Adams responded to reporters asking about the endorsement plan by stating, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”

The announcement came a day after the two politicians were seen sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's first game at Madison Square Garden, which occurred right after a heated mayoral debate.
