Manchester United Set to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
The forward, with six months left on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Munich was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Attack
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when United appear to be building momentum.
Recent performances feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought further activity:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the American league, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
