American flight controllers are increasingly looking for second jobs and calling in sick, as they remain on duty without pay amid the federal closure, the transport chief has stated.

"The controllers are wearing thin," Sean Duffy told a news outlet on Sunday, as certain aircraft were halted on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

After the federal closure on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been missing, leading airports to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has added to delays due to weather and other issues.

More than 3,000 US flights were delayed on Sunday, and the secretary stated he expects the situation to grow worse.

"I observe the pressure," Duffy said in an interview on a weekend program, adding that he had spoken to multiple professionals to listen to their worries directly.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I work for Uber, can I find an alternative of earnings to cover expenses?'" he added.

Duffy added that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airfields indicated travel would be delayed due to a lack of employees - one of the highest after the shutdown started.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on the weekend, making it the second most extended halt in history.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would reduce the number of aircraft in the sky if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his conversation, he would not answer straightforwardly when asked if it was safe to travel by air in the US, and instead made a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I require my staff focused on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at their households," the official said.

On Sunday, certain flights were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, leading to interruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the country and among the most crowded in the world, as well as other flights extending north to the metropolis of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration notice was issued at 8:45 AM in the morning on the weekend. Many flights were back on schedule by midday.

Travel at Newark Airport, however, were postponed an average of 82 minutes due to personnel issues, and the authority indicated Dallas Fort-Worth, the second most active airfield in the country, could encounter problems from low staffing later in the day.

The FAA warned passengers in California to check with carriers about revised departure times.

The issue precedes Game 3 of the championship, which is scheduled in LA on Monday night, and about one month prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the busiest times to fly in the United States.

Pressure on American aviation contributed to ending a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the shutdown had reached its fifth week and disrupted flight services, including aviator instruction.

It prompted a number of flight controllers to remain absent on the same day on January 25, 2019, briefly halting movement at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

On that date, Donald Trump, who at the time was in his initial presidency as president, agreed to sign a temporary funding measure, bringing an end to the government shutdown after thirty-five days.
